I have created some Styles (Appendix 1, 2, 3, etc) based on default Heading
1, 2, 3, etc but preceded with multi-level numbering so that I get:
Appendix 1: title of appendix 1,
Appendix 2: title of appendix 2,
A2.1: subtitle or content of appendix 2,
etc
I cannot insert cross references to them as they are not listed.
The default Heading 1, 2, 3, etc are listed in cross-reference, as are other
styles I have created, and other formatting from text that I have copied from
another document.
How do I configure my Appendix styles so that they list correctly?
(There are a number of articles that answer similar questions on this topic,
but don't help me).
Thanks in advance...

In the Cross-reference dialog box, choose "Numbered item" for "Reference
type"; there you should be able to find your appendix styles.

It is very easy to make that mistake. To Word, the "Heading" category
includes only the built-in headings, but logically an appendix is also a
(type of) heading, of course.
