Does anybody have a clue on how to make WorkPad "recognize" the
orientation in which a RTF documente was saved? I have RTF files created
either in Word or WordPad, saved in landscape format. If I open these
files with word, they appear fine, in landscape. However, if I open them
with WordPad they alway come in portrait format. It seems WordPad
ignores the page orientation to portrait. I would like to find out if
there is a way for WordPad to recall how the document was saved, or, as
an alternative, to change the default open format from portrait to
landscape.
Thanks..

For Wordpad if you change the default paper orientation
for the printer through the control panel then WordPad
should pick that up as the default when it starts.
As an accessory that's part of Windows Wordpad tends to
use the Windows settings rather than what a document
may have in it.

Thank you for you kind remarks. What really happens is that I have a fax server that opens up RTF and DOC documents placed in a specific
directory -- that is pooled at regular intervals -- and fax them out. The server doesn't have an attached printer, it uses a TIFF
driver, which appears in the Printers folder. The TIFF driver doesn't have a portrait/landscape mode selection. The server uses Word to
open and fax the DOC files and Wordpad to handle the RTF's. The documents are faxed the way the applications opens them. And there is my
problem... all the RTF files go out in portrait mode, no matter what. Now, if I manually open the RTF files using Word, they open in
landscape -- since that's the way they are saved by the program that creates them. Now, if I open the same RTF's using Wordpad (like the
fax applications does) they open up in portrait mode. Bottomline, Word recognizes the documets orientation, Wordpad doesn't. That's is
my problem. Sorry I was not more specific when I placed my question.
Thanks again, and if you have any ideas, please let me know.

I suspect the only solution is to get some more intelligent fax software
that doesn't rely on Wordpad. :-(

As far as I know Wordpad is looking for direction
information on what it should do from a printer driver,
as it's expecting you'd want to print documents opened
in Wordpad with your current printer setting.
Since Word handles RTF and you're already using Word
is there a reason you can't use Word instead of WordPad?
You can change the orientation of a TIFF file in
MS Windows Imaging if your TIFF driver doesn't have
a rotate function.

I guess you are right... thanks anyways...
Joao C. Manhaes.
Unfortunatelly it's kind of hardcoded in the fax software the application that will open each kind of document. There is no customer
setting for that. I guess the designers were looking to expedite the process since Wordpad loads faster than Word. Regarding changing
the oriention in the TIFF driver, that wouldn't work since not all documents are in landscape format. The application would have to
actually check the orientation of each particular file, as Word does. At this pois I guess my only solution will be to convert all the
RTF files to DOC before I submit them to the fax job. Then Word will handle each file properly. I was trying to avoid that extra step, I
though it could be a simple solution to make Wordpad do the right thing. :(
I did appreciate your time and suggetions. If at sometime down the road you bump into some solution to this, please let me know.
Best regards.
