How do I change the default tabs for all new documents in Word?

I'd like to change the tabs, make them the default for all NEW word docs I
open.

You can certainly change the setting for default tab stops in any template
(by opening it as a document). For example, you could open the Normal
template (for instructions, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/blankdocnotblank.htm), and set the tab
stops; the setting would then apply to new, blank documents created in Word.

However, I would suggest that you create *custom* tab stops as needed. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/SettingTabs.htm.
