How can I get a font size smaller than 8 when typing a document in Word?
Highlighting the font size and entering in a smaller number doesn't seem to
work.

Highlighting the the font size in the formatting toolbar or font settings
window would be my first suggestion. It has worked for me for years.

Have you considered using a different font name and seeing if that clears up
the problem.

Type the number in the font size box *and press Enter*. You can put in any
size from 1 to 1638 points in 0.5 point increments.
