I've given up all attempts to open merge document in Access - simply doesn't
work

I have decided to opt for importing the document into/as an access report

Just wondered whether there are any golden rules/tips for doing this before
I make a total dogs dinner of it

I would assume the whole document should go in the detail section (not
headers/footers) - it's just single page anyhow

Also wondering whether I can set the detail section to "A4" dimensions

Not enough information, Chris.

It is possible to set the Height of the Detail section to match the height
of an A4 page (less the top and bottom margins of the report and any
headers/footers you need to allow for), and then stretch out the text boxes
to fit.

But it's also possible you need a completely different approach. For
example, your report could be a letter with a 'table' in the middle that
lists multiple records. In this case, the address panel would go into the
letter header, the Detail section would be 1-row tall, and the letter footer
would contain the signature panel. There's a screenshot of such a report (a
letter that lists an order, shown in design view) on this page:

I found these instructions about important word documents to become Access reports. However, it says nothing about importing a word document that already has mail merge fields linked to an Access table. If I imported that, woudld the field links get broken?

pen the Report in Design View.
Select the Report's Detail Section.
Click on Insert ==> Object.
Select Create from File.
Do 'not' check the Link or Display as Icon Options.
Click on the Browse Button.
Select the appropriate Word Document (*.doc).
Click OK in the Browse Dialog Box.
Click OK in the Insert Object Dialog Box.
Your Word Document is now embedded in the Detail Section of your Report.
