I am trying to create a document that uses equations.

What I am trying to represent is

X * [ stuff ]

stuff = (1 + i)n - 1 / i

I am trying to create brackets around the 'stuff' formula (it is the future
value of an ordinary annuity) . I would like the n is really 'squared' and I
would like the (1 + i)n -1 on top and the divided by on the botton (not side
by side), but I cannot figure out what to select to do this. Creating the
brackets first does not allow me to use the font to make superscripts for the
squared.

I hope this make sense.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Diane

I am replying to myself. I searched for help here on the Equation Editor. I
found the trick is you have to write the formula first, then use the Equation
Editor to format the look of it. Ahhh. I was so frustrated. Thanks for
posting here - it is really helpful!!!!

You don't mention which version of Word you are using, this tends to help.
In Word 2003 and prior, Insert, Object, Create New, Microsoft Equantion 3.0.
In 2007 I am sure there is a similar function.
This Equantion app is very easy to use, just follow the icons.

Hope this helps

Assuming you are using Word 2007: on the "Insert" tab, select "Equation". In
the box that shows up, copy and paste the following line:

X[((1+i)^n-1)/i]

Then use the little arrow to the right and select "Professional". This
should switch your layout to the notation you are looking for.

Do not try to set parts of your equation as super- or subscript using the
font settings. Use the 'script' functionality of the equation editor
instead.
