I need to create a document that includes common music notation (whole notes,
half notes, etc.) and I cannot figure out where to look.

There is a Musical Symbols font that contains these symbols.

Trawl the net for music fonts. Programs like Sibelius come with a glorious
set, that includes everything that I've ever seen on a sheet of music (and
then some!) -- excellent but not free. However, there are quite a few
freebie music-writing apps around, so there may well be freebie music fonts
also.
