How can I disable the bullets and numbering feature

I don't want Word to control my documents. I prefer to do my own formatting
and don't want to have to struggle to delete the provided formatting.

Thanks, Suzanne. So simple! Why couldn't I find this? I will take your advice
and write to mswish as you suggest.
I can't believe that I have struggled so long with this problem - my agendas
and minutes will be a joy to type now.

Note that mswish is now a black hole. There are other (equally
unsatisfactory) ways to provide feedback to MS.
