For a few weeks now, I've been unaible to underline words in Word.

When I try ctrl+u, it doesn't underline. When I use the underline button, it does underline, but as soon as I close the document, it disappear.

It used to be only a few documents, it's now all the documents.

It's actually weird, for example, if i write the word «mariage», the bottom part of the g won't appear unless I press ctrl+u.
So the only thing ctrl+u changes, is that it makes those bottom parts of some letters appear (I don't get why the don't appear in the first place..), but it won't underline the word.

Help, anyone ??

Thanks

Catherine

This could be a damaged document. However, first thing I'd check is the line
spacing for text (Paragraph dialog box).

That is, your Line Spacing may be set to Exactly some value that's too
small for the size of type you're using. Change it to Single, and if
the lines in the paragraph suddenly spring apart and you can see
everything (including all the underlines you already put in!), then
that was the problem -- so either leave it as Single, or if that gives
you too much leading, use an Exactly value that's larger than what was
there before.

Was have the same issue...I figured it out. The problem is you have NONE selection on your underline button. Fix: Push the small drop down arrow on the right hand side of the underline button...and pick a line type other than "none". Should work.

Thanks Kim.
For me the problem was the colour of the underline was white. I changed that to "automatic" or black, and it worked. You can get that option by clicking on the arrow at the bottom right corner of "Font" tab.

OK, this is July 2023. My underline in MS Word stopped working suddenly, 2 days ago. It happens in every document I've tried it on, so it isn't the document. I selected the TYPE of underline, so it is no longer "none." I also double-checked the COLOR and put it to "automatic," so THAT is no longer "none," either. Thank you for the helpful suggestions above. BUT IT STILL ISN'T UNDERLINING. The Bold works. The underline does not. Any suggestions? Thank you to anyone who can help me with this!

Have you Restarted/Rebooted your computer since the problem started?
Sometimes a cosmic ray or whatever hits in just the wrong place.

(A few weeks ago, suddenly the Bibliography Tool stopped putting the
Place and Publisher into the entries in the bibliography, and after a
Restart, it was fine. (I use Word2007, which is "no longer supported."))
