Custom Label problem

We have a custom mailing label that I've created a template for. The
label definition has been set up in the printer driver and works fine
for almost all the users. However, for four (out of about 75), the
label prints out on an envelope.

The label is almost the exact same size as a size #10 envelope, and I
would imagine that is part of the problem, but I can't figure out why it
works for practically everyone but these few. I can open the template
and look at the paper size and it says Envelope #10. I change the size
to the saved Custom label, set it as the default size, save the
template, start a new session of Word, and it thinks it's Envelope #10
again.

In Word, the default tray says "use printer settings" (although I'm not
sure what that means). When we first set up Word and the label, we had
the default tray as "Auto Select", but then it printed the labels on
envelopes for *everyone*!

The one thing that's different for those who are having the problem is
that they attempted to use the template before the custom definition was
set up on the printer driver. But, the definition is set up now, and
the problem is still there.

Can anyone help? I have users typing up mailing labels on typewriters
<gasp> :-)

Are your users using different printer drivers? The printer driver
determines the choice of paper sizes, and it can be very stubborn if you try
to set a custom paper size that's very close to one of the built-in sizes.
I've had the same problem with paper that approximates an Envelope C5 size.
There are two possible approaches.

One is to let Word think it's an envelope. Provided your printer handles
envelopes well, this can be the easiest approach. The printer doesn't know
what you're feeding it and will accept the label just as willingly as an
envelope. I have envelope-sized labels that are handled just this way.
Moreover, when I print 4x6 cards, even though I have a custom paper size
definition for them, the printer still thinks it's getting and envelope and
says "FEED COM 10." I stick the card in the MP tray, and it happily prints
it.

The other approach is to change the paper size definition just enough to get
away from the #10 size and adjust your margins accordingly. This is what
I've had to do with the C5/notepaper conflict; ironically, I can get it to
buy the paper size in one orientation (portrait or landscape, I forget
which) but not the other, since envelopes feed only one way.

Thanks for responding, Suzanne.

I'll double-check the drivers, but I think I did and they are the same.

Our printers have envelope feeders, so unfortunately, your first suggestion
won't work. If it thinks it's an envelope, it just pulls from the envelope
tray.

However, your other suggestion of making the paper size more different from COM
10 sounds very promising and I will definitely look into it.

I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your input!
