Can you insert a table of contents in the main body of a document with a
different table of contents in an appendix?

Yes, you can have several different tables of contents in a document.
Just use the Index and Tables dialog box to insert additional ones. (If
Word wants to replace the existing TOC, don't let it do that.)

It is not completely clear exactly how your second TOC should be
different from the first. But Word does allow you to specify fewer
heading levels or assign custom styles to the TOC. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html for this
information.

To use only part of a document (but the same styles) to create a second
TOC, you can bookmark the relevant part of the document, add a TOC and
then modify the underlying field code to reference the bookmarked area.
For more about this, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm.

Please feel free to ask for additional help, if necessary.
