To tinladie - click in the paragraph immediately above the line, then go to
Format>Borders & Shading - on the Borders page click None (alternatively you
can chose None from the Borders button on the Formatting Toolbar).
You might also want to take a look at the settings in Tools>AutoCorrect...
Where you'll find a number of "automatic" features you may want to control
or turn off completely.
