Reduce HUGE file size for short Word docs with images

Is there a way to make Word save files in a smaller
format? I have 1 page documents with very little text and
only 4 images (totalling less than 70k in all) yet the
file size of the 1 page document is 3,846k!! Ahhh the
efficiency of Microsoft programs! Is there a way to
reduce this lunacy?

Things to try:

1. Click "File", "Properties", make sure the "Save Preview Picture" at the
bottom left is NOT checked.
2. Click "Tools", "Options", click the "Save" TAB and uncheck the "Allow
fast saves" and "Allow background saves".

Resave your document and see if that fixed it.

Ed,

Save As after creating and editing any Word doc reduces the file size.

Also, if the graphics were not created in Word but in another package, try linking the graphics instead of embedding them (Copy the file to the Clipboard in the original software program and select Insert, Paste Link, or select Insert, Picture, From File, select the file, and select the Insert/link function - this changes depending on the version of Word that you are using.)

Hi Bill - Thanks so much for posting some good ideas for
fixing my quandry, unfortunately they are to no avail.
Interestingly, if I remove all 4 of my images from the
document and save it, the file size is 11k. Then when I
insert 1 image of 16k, the file size explodes to 1,074k
when I save it. Has anyone ever heard of such? Any ideas
on how to fix this would be very welcome!

You might try doing a "File", "Save as" and rename it to soemthing else to
see if that fixes the problem. Only other thing I can think of is that you
might have copied and pasted the images into your document instead of using
"Insert", "Picture", "From File". Is this the case? If so, delete them and
use the steps above.

If your file size without pictures is 11K, then you have an older version of
Word. An empty doc in current versions is closer to 20K--*but* newer
versions compress images for more efficient file sizes including the
pictures.

Yes, thanks very much for your post. Unfortunately I've
done all the above to no avail, and was definitely
inserting pictures "from file". It seems to exponentially
expand the file size for every image file added, which is
very strange. And a double-digit exponent I might add!
(I.e. when I insert that one 16k JPEG and the file size
zoomed from 11k to 1,074k - pretty amazing!) It's like
the growth in Microsoft's cashflow every 2 years when they
force a memory-hogging upgrade on us!

If you want, zip up the file and send it directly to me and I will take a
look (no attachments on posts). I've sort of run out of options, besides
heavy drinking (company disclaimer inserted here)! Maybe Suzanne or others
might have some more ideas.

I would seriously question that you could have an 11K doc in Word 2000,
since the size of an empty document in Word 97 was 19K IIRC.

Try the following:

Open the doc.
Click on Edit / Select All.
Hold the Shift Key and the Ctrl Key and press F9.
Click on File / Save As
and then click on Save {You don't need to change the
file name}.

11K? Have you accidentally enabled saving as RTF or as Word 95 format
or something like that?
