how can i stop footnotes which are appended to text on one page from slipping
onto the following page? Is there a way to make the footnote area on a
particular page, presumably at the expense of the main text area, larger so
that it can accomodate the relevant notes?

Do you mean that the lower part of a long footnote moves onto a second
page? That's how it should be; if you try to have long footnotes never
break to the next page, you'll have very unattractlve mostly-blank
pages in the middle of your text.

If you mean that a footnote starts on a page other than the page the
reference is on, then if you're in Word2003, go to Tools > Options >
Compatibility and scroll down to "Lay out footnotes like Word 6 ..."
and uncheck it.
