hi there,

I have 2 documents, that each use the footnote (endnote) function, so they
each have their own corresponding reference list at the end of the document.
I want to combine them, so I tried copying the 2nd and pasting it into the
first. It seemed to work but then I realized that it only updated the new
references the first time they were used (in the pasted portion of the
document). For example, the first doc had 49 references, so when I pasted the
2nd one in, what used to be ref #1 in the 2nd document became ref # 50, which
is what I wanted. But the next time that ref was used, it still labelled it
#1, which is wrong! How can I get it to update the reference every time it is
used??

Thanks!!
Cindy

I'm a little confused by your description, so some questions:

Are these footnotes, or endnotes?

Are you using cross-references anywhere? Cross-references do not update
automatically (as do footnotes), so you need to select all and hit F9 to
update fields to update those numbers. See if that works.

Were both these documents originally created in Word?

What version of Word is this?

Daiya, that worked!!! Thanks so much, it fixed it all with one button! Sory
for the confusing description. Have a great day!
