On some computers, a new Word document has small grey angles in each of the 4
corners of the page that show the boundaries of the text area. They
correspond to the margin settings. I cannot find where this is enabled or how
to make them invisible.

Doing a search on the forum for "margin corners", I found this:

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=839371 "Margin marks or crop marks
appear on each corner of the page when you open a document in Word 2002 or in
Word 2003".

These "crop marks" are usually the result of an East Asian language enabled
in your Word application.

Go to Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Office Tools>Microsoft
Office (Your version) Language settings and disable any enabled East Asian
languages.
