LISTNUM formatting (sorry, not LINENUM)

I've given up on trying to make the numbering work and decided to try the
LISTNUM field code. However, I can't figure out (or find in Help) a way to
format the numbers. They mimic the font of the style, but I need to color
them and make them bold.

Select the field, apply bold and coloring. (It's a heap easier to use
Bullets and Numbering!)

Yes, I know that I can select and format each instance, but I was hoping that
one of the experts here would recommend something more efficient. This book
comprises dozens of procedures that include dozens of steps.

That's why it's easier to use standard numbering, instead of re-inventing
the wheel like this: you can apply the formatting as part of the number
definition.

I'm not reinventing the wheel, "Jezebel". In the original post, I mentioned
that numbering wasn't working. (Sometimes it restarts, sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes step 13 of procedure 25 becomes step 627 in the book because Word
has decided that the numbers and bullets throughout the book are steps that
belong to the SAME procedure.) So please don't recommend standard numbering
for a third time. Thanks so much!

If you can't figure this out, what on earth are you doing writing technical
manuals? It's like blaming the tree for getting in front of your car.
Numbering *does* work.

Have you tried using the Find and Replace dialog box? First, display
field codes, for example, by pressing Alt+F9. Then choose Edit |
Replace. For "Find what," specify ^d LISTNUM. Place the cursor in the
"Replace with" box (but don't add any text), click the Format button,
and then click Font. (If you can't see the Format button, first click
the More button to display the whole dialog box.) Specify the desired
formatting, and click OK. Then click the Replace All button. Close the
dialog box. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.
