Impossible to say, since you don't describe at all what makes the
document unreadable. Tell us
- the version of Word you have (language as well as verion number)
- the version of Word in which the document was created (as above)
- what you're seeing that makes you think you need "text encoding"

The message the poster is quoting comes from the Confirm Conversion dialog.
If you have "Confirm conversion at open" enabled, you may be prompted by
this dialog when you try to open, for example, a WordPerfect document or a
non-text binary file (such as a picture or application).
