I need to be able to attach a macro to a button on a word document that
emails the document as an attachment to a named email address.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need a macro for this. Just add the Send to Mail Recipient button
to the Quick Access Toolbar (Word 2007).

If you are using Word 2003, you'll find the corresponding option (and some
more) on the File menu.

I am using 2003. I know I can do this through the file menu - this is for a
specific project where it has to be obvious what to do with the document once
it is completed. The button needs to create the email and attach the
document (As file, send as attachment) and then address it.

You can add the "Mail Recipient (as Attachment)" button to any toolbar. Use
the Tools | Customize dialog box; on the Commands tab, you'll find the
button in the "File" category.

...and is there a way to do the same thing with a button located on the
document?

You should be able to use a MACROBUTTON field:

{ MACROBUTTON FileSendMail Click to send document as email attachment }.

See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/MacrosVBA/AssignMacroToButton.htm.
