pinyin option disappeared

when using office 2003 my chinese colleagues could insert pinyin above their
text on the format menu choosing asian ..., they cannot find this now they
have moved to 2007. Where has it gone?

This _may_ help. I have never tried this, so I cannot say whether it
will work. In Word2007, running under Windows Vista, on the Home tab
of the Ribbon, in the Font group there's a button of a blue italic A
with abc above it in black. The Screen Tip calls this Phonetic Guide,
and when you click it, the selected text appears in the window, with a
table with a column for "Ruby characters." I believe this is used for
the auxiliary characters of Chinese and the kana of Japanese used as
pronunciation hints, and I would _guess_ that it's also where you
could insert pinyin.

I don't see the Phonetic Guide icon that Mr. Daniels mentions in the Home
tab/Font group (Word2007/WindowsXP). You can add it to your Quick Access
Toolbar (QAT) as follows:

Right click QAT and click "Customize Quck ..."
Select "All Commands" in the Choose Commands from drop down
Scroll down and select the Phonetic Guide and click "Add"

Even if there, it may not work. See:

You probably get to see it if you have enabled Chinese (and doubtless
several other "East Asian" languages" in the Office Language Settings).
Then you may have to restart Word.

I would hope they have enabled that setting!

Yes. With a Chinese language enabled the Phonetic Guide icon, and a few
other new icons, appears in the font group. Bowing out now as I am clearly
out of my range.
