What you are most likely dealing with is a Border... Have a look here:

OOOH THANK YOU!!
1) pays to sure posts before posting
2) per your links' info, I had been inserting paragraphs (typing a full
page) before the Line, so every time I clear the formattin, I thought the
line was MOVING.
Thanks again,
Kate

I can't get rid of the line no matter what I do. If I use bullets it shows
up, etc. I've tried the ctrl + Q but that doesn't work. it's not a border
thing.

tell me, where do i find "tools" so i can try that way before i lose my mind
here. thanks.

Ctrl+Q would only get rid of the border if it's not part of that paragraph's
default style formatting. I.e., Ctrl+Q restores a paragraph to its defaults.
If its default includes a border (regardless of how it got there), the
Ctrl+Q won't zap it, and might even in fact supply borders where none
existed before.

Try applying a different style. Does that get ride of the line?

Or... try modifying the style to remove the border from its definition.

I don't know what I did but I finally did get rid of the lines. Couldn't
tell you what it was though. I know it wasn't using a different style.
Please tell me, where are the tools so I can adjust auto formatting. Thanks.

You don't say which version of Word you're using. In Word 2003, try Tools -
AutoCorrect Options - AutoFormat as You Type tab.

In Word 2007, try Office button- Word Options - Proofing tab - AutoCorrect -
AutoCorrect Options - AutoFormat as You Type tab.

I had a line delete problem after I cut and paste from a WordPerfect document
into a Word2007 document. It was NOT a paragraph border problem, so the
solution at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm
did NOT help me -- but try that site if the following doesn't help: ALT-F9
to toggle field codes to see the field codes in the document. Delete the
field and you'll delete the line and other weird formatting. Apparently,
when cutting and pasting from another program, very sophisticated, embedded
codes sometimes get placed in your .doc or .docx document.
