I have a document in Word with a large number of footnotes. In some
places the program skips a line between footnotes and in some places it
doesn't. When I try to delete the space, I get a message that says
"invalid action for footnotes." When I check the spacing in
"format"-"paragraph," the spacing is already set to single. How do I get
rid of the blank lines? The problem may have something to do with the
fact that some chapters were convereted from Word Perfect 5.1. Please
e-mail any ideas as well as posting them because I may not get to read
this newgroup.

TIA

Tables converted from WP 5.1 & WPWin have the same kind of irregular spacing
in them. I don't know if you can highlight your footnotes, but if you can,
highlight each set of them, select Edit/Replace and in the Find box type ^p
and in the replace box type ^l (the letter L, not a one) and click on
replace all. When it asks you if you want to do the rest of the document,
say no. It works in the converted tables and evens up the spacing between
the text.

Converting paragraph breaks to line breaks (which is what you're doing by
replacing ^p with ^l) is not a good idea in general and will have unexpected
and unwanted results if the first line of your footnote is indented (as it
is in many styles), as the footnotes then become part of one giant
paragraph. I shudder to think what other repercussions this might have.

Another approach is to select all the footnotes ("select" is the Microsoft
term for "highlight") and press Ctrl+Q, which will return them to the
default Footnote Text style. It sounds as if some of them have gotten
formatted with space before or after.

Suzanne's suggestion fixed the problem. Tonya's did not have any "unexpected and
unwanted results," however. It did not do anything, in fact.

Thanks very much to both of you,
