Yes. In Word 2002 or 2003, click on Edit | Replace | More | Find what:
<Special> <Any character> | Format | Style | Find what style: Endnote
Reference | OK | Replace with: <leave this box blank> | Replace all.
You might want experiment with a COPY of the document.

The Find, More, Special menu has an entry for "endnote mark" which would
also work, as opposed to finding the style.

I tried both of the following, neither of which worked. I deleted all
endnotes, but some field or other codes seem to be lurking in my document,
thus I cannot enter new endnotes and have them number correctly. Help --
any other ideas?

Are you tracking changes, by any chance?
See if Edit | Go To continues to find endnotes that you think you have
deleted.
Was this doc originally created in Word, and the endnotes created by using
Insert | Footnote or Insert | Reference>Footnote?
Is View | Footnotes enabled or greyed out?
