When i open a word document, i get flashing text that is
highlighted in black. i can't seem to figure out how to
stop the flashing highlight

You might try highlighting the text and go to Format>Font. Go to the tab
that says "text effects". Make sure it says None instead of blinking
background. If it already says none, I'm not sure why it is blinking like
that.
