I just upgraded from Word 2003 to 2007. When I open Word, I do not see the
sidebar showing recently opened files that was available in Word 2003. How
can I turn this lfeature on?

Have you tried clicking on the Office button?

Yes, but I see no options that would let me turn on the sidebar.

Go to Office button > Word Options > Advanced > Display and set the number
of recent documents.

However, even when that number is set to zero, you should still see the
heading "Recent Documents" above an empty gray area. If you don't see that,
try repairing your Office installation through the Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs dialog.

I guess Guy is referring to the Getting Started task pane in Word 2003.
There's nothing comparable in Word 2007.
