Someone played with my friend's computer and now when he chooses the open
command inside of Word and selects a file a little box appears to the left.
Click on the box and a check mark appears. The only way to open the now
selected document is to drop down and click on the Open button.
Double-clicking the file name no longer works. What could have been changed
that would cause Word to behave that way? How can this behavior be undone?
Not sure if this is the correct group - but it is a menu/toolbar problem
Thanks

There does not seem to be problem with the registration of Word. Clicking on
a link to a document, within a directory display, properly opens Word and
the associated document.
Instead, it appears as if an add-in or a setting has changed the way the
Word interface operates. I've never seen this behavior in any version of
Word. It occurs within Word when you click on the 'Open" command and a
window opens to allow you to select a file. In this case clicking on one of
the displayed Word documents generates a check box to the left of the file
name. Click on the check box and a check-mark appears, and now you can open
the document (without error messages) by clicking on the Open button in the
lower right corner of the selection window. Double clicking the file name -
as I am used to - produces no response and no error message appears, only
frustration.
I take it from your collective responses that you have not seen this
behavior before, nor any obscure Word setting that could create the
condition. I'd send you a snap-shot of the problem, but my friend is a
technological luddite - his machine has no internet connection. He prints
and faxes documents. In fact, now that I showed him that he can open his
documents, he is satisfied with the solution. I'm the one that is mystified.
Thanks for your prompt suggestions,
Norm

This is actually an option setting in Windows Explorer (which I assume
you haven't tried to use on your friend's machine), and it shows up in
Word's dialog because that's just another view of that program.
Open Windows Explorer (which might be called Computer in Vista). Click
Tools > Folder Options > View. Uncheck the box for "Use check boxes to
select items".
