They should also change via the Appearance. But in order to change beyond the
three basic colors offered by Windows XP you first need to change the top list
to the "Windows classic" colors.

I may be misunderstanding what you mean. "Background of the Word menus"? The
color behind the captions when you drop down a menu? Doesn't seem to be any
way to set that, directly. Word seems to take a light pastel of the current
color. For example, if you select "Maple" (I think is what I had) it's a very
pale sand color instead of pale blue.

Selected colors from the list of "theme colors" after changing to the Classic
view. And no, I know of no way to force the appearance. FWIW, there were
complaints about this during the Office 2003 beta. The remarks from MSFT were
along the lines of "try updating your graphics card driver if you can't read
it". FWIW, I have no trouble seeing the text on the pastel backgrounds, but I
don't know what eye problems you may be contending with :-) However, it would
perhaps be worthwhile updating the graphics card driver?
