Word .doc file opens with jumbled text

I have a word file I created in Word 2010 and saved as a Word 97-2003
document. I reopened it a week later and closed it. Now, when I go to
open it, the File Conversion box comes up. No matter what I choose,
the text shows as "encrypted". I've tried numerous conversion
attempts, opening on other PCs with different Word versions, Office's
'open and repair' selection and several programs to try and extract
text from corrupted files, but nothing has worked.

Opening in Word as "Recover text from any files" gives me this. The
"1252LATIN1" is interesting, but not sure what that means...

Can anyone tell what technique this file needs to open properly or
display the text I need to get from it?
