I have been having constant problems when deleting text in WinWord 97
and wonder if this is a common problem? The files concerned were mostly
originally began in WinWord 95 and WW 97 is set to save files in WW 95
format, for compatibility with other users.

The problem comes when I try to delete or move certain sections of
text. This causes WinWord to crash, with the following fault message:-

=============================================
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module MSO97.DLL at 0177:30705007.

When I restart WinWord and try to access the file that caused the
crash, I get the following message:-

F:\xxxx\xxxx is being used by B.Rumary. Do you want to make a copy?

The only way to get back into the original file (not make a copy) is to
reboot Windows.

This "delete crash" seems mostly to occur when I select a section of
text and then delete or move it, but it can sometimes happen when I try
to delete a single letter with either the [delete] or [backspace] keys.
It _always_ happens when I use Ctl+del (delete to end of line)
facility. Sometimes it will happen quite often, other times I can use
WinWord for quite a while with no problems.

I have also noted that the "autosave" does not seem to work with very
big files.

Has anyone else had these problems with WinWord 97? I have never had
this sort of thing happen with WinWord 95. I am using Windows 98 SE,
but I had the same trouble with Windows 95.

Hi B.Rumary,

From the sound of it, the files are slightly damaged - not unheard of when
moving the older file formats into Word97. Compounding the problem,
certainly, is the fact that Word is having to juggle conversion
information, since you never completely save the file in Word97.

When Word97 opens a file in Word6/95 file format, it performs a
conversion. But the old file format information is not completely removed
from the file at this time, nor when you save and close it. Only when a
file saved in Word97 format is opened a second time in Word97 is the old
conversion information discared (one hopes!).

Is there an important reason that you continue to save files back to the
old file format?

This could be the case, as these crashes tend to occur at certain places in
the text. I'll try re-seeting the default document save to WinWord 97, and
see if the problem goes away.

I did it to keep compatibility with a colleague who was still using WinWord
95. However I suppose I could always to a "save as" to WinWord 6/95 format of
a specific document if I need to send it to him.

That should work, as long as you aren't using any Word97 features that Word95
doesn't support. In general, the greatest problems seem to occur with graphics
that are "floating" in Word97 and EQuation Editor formulas (since 97 has a
different EQ Editor).
