Malfunction of spellchecker in Word?

I'm using Word in Office 2003. The spellchecker has just started to
malfunction, in that it identifies an unknown word, but the word in the "Not
in dictionary" box turns immediately from bold red to regular black, and
there is an active "Undo edit" button, but a greyed out "Add to dictionary"
button and greyed out "Ignore all" button, and the "Suggestions" window and
the "Options" button below are greyed out as well.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be much appreciated.
