When I write a document and use bullets both Word and Outlook crash. For
example:
*test
* test 2

In the situation above when I would hit enter to go to the next line (which
automatically would place a bullet at the beginning of the next line) I get
the error messsage that MS Word or MS Outlook has stopped and then it
restarts. Everytime!!

If you are using Word 2003, exit the application and then delete the List
Gallery Presets key in the registry.

If you are using Word 2007, exit the application and then delete the
ListGal.dat file in your user profile.

I have MS Word 2003. How do I access the registry (do not even know where it
is at). Also will this fix the same error that is in MS Outlook?

On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run. Type

regedit

and press Enter.

The key you are looking for is called
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery Presets.
Just select it and press Delete. Close the registry editor, and then try
restarting Word.

I'm having the same issue, in Outlook only. Using Office 2003, with Word 2003
set as my email editor.
I've fixed it *several times* in the past by deleting the List Gallery
Presets key, as described here - but the problem has surfaced again, in
OUTLOOK ONLY.

Observations:
1. I have autonumbering and automatic bullets disabled in Word (via Tools ->
Autocorrect Options -> AutoFormat As You Type). Therefore bullets or numbers
aren't automatically converted to this format, when I'm running Word itself -
but when I edit an email in Outlook, any lines I precede with an asterisk
WILL trigger the attempt to convert them to auto-bullets - and the editor
crashes.
2. I have no List Gallery Presets key in my registry. (deleted it in the
past - doesn't exist now)
3. Word used to crash if I selected several lines and executed Format ->
Bullets and Numbering, but I have fixed that (seems to have been overcome via
Detect and Repair). Bullets and numbering, in Word alone, work just fine.
4. Though this may not have any bearing, I've deleted the user copy of
Normal.dot.

For now, I'll just have to avoid bullets or numbering in my email messages.
Can you suggest anything else I should look for, to overcome the issue?

If you are using Word 2007 - you inconveniently don't say - Outlook does not
use Word as its email editor. Outlook 2007 has its own editor that looks
much like Word but is in a self-contained .dll. So you have to turn off the
'Auto' features in both Outlook and Word as they are totally independent of
each other.

This worked for me too. Thanks very much, Stefan!

Found this solution by Googling "microsoft word list crash".
