Microsoft Office Word Document is missing from Insert Object dialog

From the Word 2007 ribbon, clicked Insert, Object, Insert Object.
Received Object dialog. On Create tab of dialog, scrolled through
list of available Object Types. Microsoft Office Word xxx types are
missing. Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, etc. are there.
Color me confused. Doesn't happen on all boxes here in-plant, but
does on some.
Hoping that someone can educate me with respect to:
1. What caused the problem, and
2. How to correct it.

No. Also do not have:
Insert | Object | Microsoft Word 97 - 2003 Document
Insert | Object | Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled Document

Do, however, have:
Microsoft Excel Chart
Microsoft Excel Worksheet
Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
Microsoft PowerPoint 97 - 2003 Slide

and so on.

It has only ever been Insert | Insert Object | Microsoft Word Document:
There isn't a different entry for each type as with File, SaveAs.

Terry, in Word 2007 I do see all of these choices in the Insert Object
dialog:

Microsoft Office Word 2007 Document
Microsoft Office Word 2007 Macro-Enabled Document

Microsoft Word Document

If they're missing, I suspect there's something wrong in the registry where
object types are listed. Try reregistering Word 2007 with this command line
in the Run box of the Start menu:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe" /r

Wish I could report that this solved the problem, but unfortunately, I
can't.
Any other ideas?

By the way, also tried Repair via Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

Instead of using the Create New tab, which when you select Microsoft Office
Word Document, inserts a new document into the existing document, use the
Create from File tab and browse to a document that you have saved for the
purpose - and empty one if that is what you want to have inserted into your
existing document.

Well, that almost worked. The whole idea is to get a blank object
into an existing file so we can paste into it. This is being driven
by the need to export Word to DOORS. The existing Word files had some
embedded objects that have started throwing the 'word cannot start the
converter mswrd632.wpc' error. If one clicks through the error
dialog, one can eventually get into and edit the object. Something is
still getting clobbered, however, as the export to DOORS crashes when
the suspect object is reached.

Curiously enough, created a brand new, empty Word docx file, saved and
closed it, then attempted to insert it into another brand new,
empty.docx. This also threw the cannot start the converter error.

The workaround that is giving the best results is to move to a machine
that actually has the desired Object Types in the Insert dialog.
Fortunately, the majority of machines here are OK, in fact, there's
only this one (so far) with the problem. Sure would like to
understand how it got that way and how to fix it though.

Not really (although I have not yet exhausted all paths). We
typically need to insert Word (and other) objects within a Word file
to force them into DOORS as a single object (for traceability
purposes) We discovered the missing items in the Insert Object dialog
as we were attempting to work-around the problem caused by some
objects suddenly deciding to fall victim to the 'word cannot start
the
converter' error. I found that I could insert a new, blank Word
object, cut and paste the contents of the object that had the error,
then delete that object, and everything was hunky-dory. Until I tried
to show some other folks how to do the same thing on their box and we
discovered the missing items of the dialog.

Oh well. Tomorrow is another day. Maybe a good night's sleep will let
me see something I'm missing.

How about...

Run Office Setup, Change and select the Converter packs. Click OK so that
Word uninstalls them all. Then do the reverse so that they are all
reinstalled. Does that reset the registry and get everything back?

If that fails, what do you see in Word Safe Mode? From Start | Run
(Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press ENTER. Do you see the items now?

Tried uninstalling and re-installing the converters. No change.
Tried Run Winword /a No change.

I have since noticed some additional vagaries on this box, so it may
have to be re-imaged.
That has to work. Really.
