Hi,

a guy just told me his problem: He enters special characters using
Alt-130 (or other Alt-combinations) to enter special italian charcters
in Word. He says that this worked a month ago but did not work any
longer. Some Alt-combinations work fine, some not. DOS-Box shows them
all fine but Word do not. It don't show anything with Alt-130

He is now accustomed to "his" numbers for the last 20 years and do not
want to relearn to Alt-0233 ;-)

He has Windows XP Professional and Office XP.

Can anybody give me a hint?

Regards

Marian

Perhaps he doesn't have numlock key on.

There are much easier ways to enter these characters. If he configured his
machine to use an International Keyboard layout then, instead of typing
Alt+130, he could just type 'e to get é. This even works outside Word.

good hint, but other numbers work fine.

also good point. I will tell him but I think it is just a good old
behaviour that he don't want to give up :-)

What fonts is he using? Which codes work and don't work? Does the set that
doesn't work alter?

We'll have to give him a Alt-number skin patch :-)

not sure about that, but the character exists in the chosen font (I
think it's just Arial or Times-Roman). The character "é" does appear
if he uses Alt-0233 which is in the word table for special chars.

And even without an international keyboard, in Word he can type Ctrl+', e to
get é. Word has built-in keyboard shortcuts for most common accented
characters.

That's 1/3 questions answered.

Does he have his Num Pad Lock ON? It is Alt+0233 on the NumPad with it ON.
Not it is 0233 and not just 233.
