From the symptoms, I'll guess that the file association for Word documents
is damaged. I can tell you what I have on Windows NT 4, and it should be the
same if you're using Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
With Word closed, open Windows Explorer. On the View menu, click Folder
Options and go to the File Types tab. Select "Microsoft Word Document" and
click the Edit button. In the Actions list, select Open and click the Edit
button.
In the "Application used to perform action" box should be the path to
Winword.exe, in quotes, followed by the /n switch. Mine says
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
but your path may be different.
The "Use DDE" box should be checked. The "DDE Message" box should say
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
The "Application" box should say
WinWord
and the "Topic" box should say
System
The "DDE Application Not Running" box is empty. Once everything is correct,
click OK in each dialog. You may need to reboot the system to make any
changes take effect.
Good luck,
