Re: No "Save As" options in Word 2000

It's been a long time, but I would like to re-open this (now expired)
thread (see below) because the problem persists.

IIRC the advice at the time was to repair the Office installation, which
I did, but the repair didn't help.

Any more ideas?

Actually, what I would really like to do on this Windows 2000 machine
(which I don't use on a regular basis, hence the delay in picking this
thread up again), is to install Office 2003 (I actually bought an Office
2003 CD for this purpose), but the machine refuses to install it.
Perhaps I should start a new thread for this, and perhaps in a different
newsgroup?

Sorry, please ignore the "Save As" part of my message - I just
remembered that somehow the otherwise excellent File-Ex software (see
<http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html>) appears to be responsible
for this problem. As a workaround I can simply disable it when I want to
use "Save As" in Word 2000.

However, my Office 2003 installation problem remains. Which would be the
most appropriate newsgroup for this problem?

This newsgroup or the docmanagement newsgroup (which Microsoft has
long designated as the "General" group for Word) will do.

Exactly what happens when you try to install Office 2003? In what way
does it "refuse"?

The minimum requirements for Office 2003 are listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822129. Does your machine meet those?

You might have trouble installing Office while some antivirus/security
packages are running. You can try disabling your AV temporarily, if
the AV will allow that.

I'm sure I replied to the original question and advised testing in Safe Mode
to see if that returns the SaveAs, as I suspected an incompatible third
party add-in. However, that may have been during the two week period when
posts between the community and news server were being synchronised
correctly.

Thanks - as it turns out, your incompatible third party add-in suspicion
was spot-on, and your message may well be the one that helped me
discover it at the time.

However, the old messages from this thread have expired, and they don't
appear to be archived at

Yes, my machine certainly meets the minimum requirements.

It's a strange problem. On both my CD drives (one is a read only drive,
the other one is a DVD RW drive) I can see the content of the Office
2003 OK and I can start the installation process by double-clicking
SETUP.EXE and the Windows Installer window comes up saying "Preparing to
install", but after a while I get an error message saying either "The
system can't read from the specified device" or "The installation
package could not be opened".

Any ideas?

Sometimes I get an "Unsafe Removal of Device" message for the CD drive
containing the Office 2003 CD. Very strange, isn't it?

If the problem happened only in one drive, I'd suggest a hardware
fault. Since it happens in both drives, I think it may be surface
damage on the CD itself. If you hold up the disk and look at the shiny
surface with the light at a glancing angle, can you see any scratches
or smudges?

If the disk needs cleaning, see

If it's scratched, the disk needs replacement; see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246.

If you have plenty of hard disk space, you can try copying the entire
contents of the CD to a folder on the hard disk and launching it from
there. (If you get an error while copying, then the problem is
definitely on the CD.)

I can indeed see some small marks/scratches on the CD. On a music CD I
probably wouldn't regard these as significant, but perhaps they are in
this case.

I'll try and copy the CD to the hard disk as you suggested and report back.

The CD copying operation seemed to go OK but appeared fail right at the
end with the following error message:

Cannot copy ITIRCL52: Invalid MS-DOS function.

Does this indicate a problem with the CD?

It probably does indicate that one of those scratches makes it
impossible for the CD drive to read the bits in the file ITIRCL52.DLL.
I have no idea which "MS-DOS function" is invalid.

That file, which should eventually be installed as C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Information
Retrieval\ITIRCL52.DLL, has the description "InfoTech IR Local DLL". I
don't know exactly what it does or which programs require it (I do
know that Word doesn't use it).

It's possible (if not quite probable) that the Office installation can
succeed without that file if you now run SETUP.EXE from its location
on the hard drive. It's worth a try -- at worst you'll have a failure
similar to the one from the CD.

Thanks for your reply.

On inspection of the copy destination folder I note that the problem
appears to be more significant, i.e. the file I mentioned clearly isn't
the only file that is missing - in fact setup.exe itself is missing :-(

Could I use another Office 2003 for the installation (I have 3 others
for my other computers) and use the Product Key from the apparently
faulty one to activate it on this computer, or is the Product Key
somehow linked to this specific CD?

Providing it is exactly the same version of Office, you can use an
alternative source disk with your original product key.

Yes, it is exactly the same version. Unfortunately I don't have the
other CDs with me right now, so I'll have to postpone the 'experiment'
for a while. I'll report back in due course.
