When I open an existing Word Document (some were created
in Word 97, but same problem is occuring in documents
created in 2000)and try to execute a menu item, such
as "save as," "print," "properties," and others, the
dialog box opens minimized with the icon in the taskbar
and the title bar of the document blinking or flashing.
When I single click on the "flashing" icon in the taskbar
with the right mouse button, then the dialog box opens or
is maximized so that I can use it. If I double click with
the left mouse button on the "flashing" icon in the
taskbar, then the dialog box opens and the document itself
is minimized. Very curious behavior.
Once I have opened any dialog box in the current session,
then all boxes called from menu items open maximized. When
I close the document, with or without saving, and then
open it again to start a new session, the original problem
recurs.
I can't find any info on this anywhere, and cannot figure
out if this is a bug with Office 2000 under XP Pro that
could use a fix, or if there is an existing setting to
change this action.
The problem is I have people using our computer who are
not comfortable handling simple problems or embracing
changed operations.
Has anyone run into this problem. Would love to hear from
you. Thanks.
This can be caused by one of two issues:
1. Word is started by using the Quick Launch toolbar in the Windows Taskbar.
2. Norton AV is creating a conflict.
Fix for Issue 1. Obtain SP2 for Office XP. Note that SP1 needs to be
installed first. As a workaround, do not use the Quick Launch bar to start
Word.
Fix for Issue 2. Disable the "Office Plug-in" option in Norton. Go to
"Options" and then select the "Miscellaneous" section.

This is especially true of users who approach the NGs through the Microsoft
Communities portal as you have done. FWIW, if you want to use NGs regularly,
it's much more efficient to access them as they were designed to be
accessed, using a newsreader such as Outlook Express. There are instructions
on how to do this at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/news/howto/default.asp. If you click on
a link such as
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.word.application.errors (which
unfortunately you can't do if you're still reading this at MS's Web portal,
since links aren't clickable) or paste the link into your browser, your
default newsreader (at least if it's Outlook Express) will automatically set
up a news account subscribed to this NG.
