I have a document that I have copied via cut/paste formatted text from a WP
document opened in Word.
For example, I have three WP documents open, I'll highlight the text, copy,
then paste into a new Word document separated by section breaks. The WP
documents are closed and now I have a Word document with the contents of the
WP document with the same formatting (columns, tables, etc.).
I now set up the document for odd/even breaks add a footer and page numbers.
ALL PAGE NUMBER FIELDS ARE SET TO CONTINUE FROM PREVIOUS SECTION.
I'll get page numbering such as 1,2,6,8,6,12 - out of order, duplicates, and
skipped pages.
What I've tried so far, at least twice each ...
deleted all breaks and reinserted them
reviewed the odd/even order
checked for extra page breaks
checked for number to start at a given page - all pages read continue
numbering from previous.
Ran Meta Assistant, deleting everything (hidden text, macros, etc.)
saved file under a different name
deleted all styles except those core styles (normal, heading 1-9 and default
paragraph font)
edited all styles to read the same (text, size, paragraph, etc. even when I
don't use them)
cut/paste sections in/out of the document
updated page field
Deleted normal template and let Word re-create it
Searched the FAQ and read

What can I try next?
Tom
The pages contained four sections divided by continuous, column, continuous.
The last section had a table. The two middle sections were a two columns.
Deleting everything from the first break on, corrected the page numbering.
I copied this into a new window (document). Out of sheer luck, I noticed the
page number for the extracted sections had a fixed page number ("Start
Numbering at"). I changed this to continuous. Reinserted the text and all
worked correctly. Now the weird part. The page from the original document
had numbering set at continue from previous section. However the sections
_within the page_ had settings differently but would never show unless you
saw them in a document of their own. Since this occurred for three different
pages in my document with different "set" pages for those "in-page
sections", the results were very strange.
I never saw anything in the FAQs or Knowledge base that illustrated this...
did I discover something new? .... If so, WHY ME?!?!?!? So much time wasted
chasing this down.

I'll also add to Suzanne's reply... conversion between different Word
formats is far from perfect: conversion from WP to Word is ghastly. However,
keeping in mind that WP is totally different from Word and that both
processors have extremely advanced and complex abilities, conversion is
never going to be any better than it is now. Even round tripping a fairly
basic document gets broken!
