I apologise in advance if this is a 'cross post' I meant to post to this
group but my message went to 'word.general' which I believe (after checking
the MVP site) is not the correct group to post to. This is my problem -

I have been happily using Word 2K (Small Business Edition) with Windows XP
Pro O/S since I bought my computer (Sony VAIO notebook) in October 2001.

Suddenly, this morning when I try to open any document I get a message
saying ' (document name) is not available.

When I opened Word (by clicking on the W icon in the quickstart bar) I
received the following message
- Word cannot open this document template (C:\ Program
Files....\WFWORD2K.dot). However, the program did start but normal.dot
seems to have defaulted to the original Normal.dot - not the one which
should open.

Can anyone please tell me how I can access my Word files and what has
happened here?

BTW yesterday I was working in another program and received a message saying
something like "out of stack space" or "stack space full" and I had to use
Ctrl + Alt + Del to close that application but nothing else seemed to be
affected.

I DO use Norton AntiVirus and it is up to date so I don't think that it is a
virus related problem but I'm very worried.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Tricia

The WFWORD2K.dot add-in comes from WinFax, and I believe there is a conflict
between it and the Norton Office Plug-in. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for more
details.

Suzanne,

Many thanks for your very prompt response. Having read the article you
pointed me to I thought I should check more thoroughly and give more
details -

1. I have been using Norton System Works with Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)
without any prior conflict problems.

2. When I open Word (whether I use the shortcut in the Quick Launch tray or
go to Start - All Programs - Microsoft Word) Word opens with the 'Word
cannot open this document template ...\WFWORD2K.dot' dialog. I click OK and
get another 'Word cannot open this document template C:\Program
Files...\MyobMn97.dot' (I use MYOB v. 11 as my accounting program). Again,
I click OK and Word then opens at Document 2 (don't know what has happened
to document 1).

3. I can create a document in Word and Save and Close it, but when I try to
open it (any document I have created or saved in Word ) I get the 'name of
document.doc is not available' dialog box.

Perhaps I should also mention that I have both Adobe Acrobat Version 5.0.5
and WinFax PRO v. 10.02 installed on my system.

There is a program that I downloaded and installed a few days ago in order
to view a couple of .jpeg images a friend emailed me from a Macintosh
system. The .jpeg images had a '.sit' extension so I downloaded Aladdin's
Stuffit program. Is there a chance that this could be the culprit?

Once again, many thanks for responding so quickly. I will wait until I hear
from you again before I take any further action.

One more thing -

My Word STARTUP folder is empty - is this how it should be? The full
startup path is -

C:\Documents and Settings\Patricia\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

When I opened the Word folder (above Startup) in Windows Explorer it had the
empty Startup folder in it (date modified is the date I installed Word in
November 2001) and one other file that I doubt very much should ave been
there at all - it's a Word document named 'AutoRecovery save of Business
Plan for CPK.DEC 2002' . I've deleted it but it doesn't make any difference
to the problems I'm having.

In that case most likely the add-ins are in the Office Startup folder
instead of the Word Startup folder. Ironically, if moved to the Word Startup
folder, they might work properly. But be aware that the Acrobat add-in also
has conflict problems. If you haven't disabled the Norton Office Plug-in,
you might find that doing that would solve all your problems.

Hi again Suzanne,

I believe I found the cause - but why it happened is a mystery to me! I
turned off my computer and turned it back on and the following dialog box
appeared on the screen -

File Name Warning
There is a file or folder on your computer called "C:\PROGRAM" which could
cause certain applications to not function correctly. Renaming it to
C:\PROGRAM1" would solve this problem. Would you like to rename it now? The
two buttons that follow are Rename and Ignore.

First time round I chose 'Ignore' and went into WIndows Explorer and, sure
enough, sitting on my C drive was a file called PROGRAM. Right clicking on
it and selecting properties showed that the file was 40KB and was last
modified on 16-04-03 at 16:26 - about roughly the last time I used my
computer on Wednesday afternon before all the troubles started on Thursday
morning. When I tried to open the file I got a message saying Windows
couldn't open it because it didn't know what application created it. I'm
tempted to delete it but haven't done so yet.

Anyhow, I closed down and re-started my computer. This time when the file
name warning dialog box appeared I selected to Rename the file. Word then
started without any problem.

I guess we put this one down to another of 'Life's Little Mysteries'

Many thanks again for your response.

I'm guessing that you might have a program that is clumsy with long file
names, and in the process of saving a file to path "C:\PROGRAM FILES\etc
etc" it instead created the file C:\PROGRAM. Try giving it extension .TXT
and opening it in Notepad.

Hi Mike,

I did as you suggested - it's all complete gibberish! Mostly symbols with
accents on them - plus some Greek letters! Do you think I could safely
delete the file now that I've added the '.txt' extension to it?

Cheers
Tricia

I guess it's a binary file then. Chances are slim that you'll find which
program wrote the data, and it may just be a temp file anyway. If you are
really paranoid about something important being lost, keep it (it's only
40K!) otherwise delete it.
