This is in 2003 compatibility mode.

1. put an autotext field in a file

2. save the .doc file

3. open the file

4. try up update the field. You get "Error! AutoText entry not
defined."

5. Click on insert, quick parts, fields. Do do anything just click on
these menu items. Close the fields box. Or you can just click on
AutoText if you have added it to you quick access toolbar and again do
nothing - just close the pop up box.
I other words, just click around in certain menus and do nothing,

6. Now, update the field and it works.

7. However, nothing is fixed, you can save the file and start back a
step 3 and you can demo the bug again.

I was just upgraded to 2007 and I find a bug in it within in minutes
the first time I try to use it!!!!!

I need to deliver an electronic copy of a doc to a client and I can't
expect him to do this work around of clicking on menus. If you try to
print the document, you also get "Error! AutoText entry not defined."
unless you do the little menu dance for the Microsoft devil
beforehand.

Is there any fix other than removing all my Autotext?

Instead of inserting the AutoText as a field, just insert the AutoText
entry. If you have an AutoText field in your template, then when you create
a document, unlink the field with Ctrl+Shift+F9. You will then be able to
send the document because the content of the AutoText entry will have been
inserted rather than a link to it.

Actually the problem was that I have to edit the autotext entry and
cause it to be saved in a different file. There is apparently one
file of autotext entries for compatibility mode documents and another
for docx documents. Anyway the bug goes away if I switch the
autotexts to the other file.

That Ctrl+Shift+F9 would be useful if you could do it globally. You
could get rid of these problem fields before electronic delivery.
Also I noticed that the field values can be changed in a document
marked Final since they are linked to something outside the document.

I was trying to use Autotext so that I could update the autotext entry
and then change all the linked fields with an update without having to
go find each one,

You can certainly do it globally in the document by using Ctrl+A,
Ctrl+Shift+F9.
