When I start Word 2000 it immediately crashes. I have followed the
instructions in the
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
article and still have the problem. I can start Word using winword.exe /a
command and it opens fine. However none of the suggestions in the article
solve the problem. Any other ideas??

Windows 2000 SP2
Word 2002 SR1 - I have tried update to SR2 which doesn't help

I started having the same problem a couple of days ago.
Until then, Word worked fine. Like you, the only way I can
start Word is with the /a.

I'd like some help identifying the problem as well.

Hi Paul,

Were there any files in your Word/Startup folder? If there were did you rename them or move them? If all you did was rename them then *move* them out of the folder instead. If they aren't renamed correctly then they will still load.

It could also be caused by a COM add-in.

Word 2000 can have COM add-ins, those that are added in via the Registry rather than the Word\Startup folder. To determine this, add the COM Add-In command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

Run the utility and and see if anything is listed.

Let us know what you find! :-)

There was only one COM Add-in and it was a Web Page Wizard, which I removed.
It did not help the problem.

My Startup folders for Office are completely empty.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Paul,

Do you have Norton installed? If you do, did you disable the Office Plug-in option?

If you are able to start Word using the /a switch, you do not have any global templates/add-ins, you do not have Norton, then the problem could be due to a combination of the following:

Corrupt Normal.dot. Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one upon starting.

Registry Corruption: See this article for instructions on rebuilding the Word/Data key:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm

Occasionally I find that the Data key is corruption Normal.dot, and the Normal.dot turns around and corrupts the Data key. So try the above without starting Word in-between the steps, reboot your PC and see if that takes care of it.

Beth,

No Norton is not installed, and has never been installed. I have treid
deleting the registry key that you call out and the normal.dot and the same
problem occurs.

How frustrating.

Hi Paul,

If you can start Word using then chances are the problem is one of the following:

Corrupt Normal.dot. Did you search for multiple occurrences of Normal.dot?

Registry Corruption: You ruled this one out, however I've found occasionally it's a combination of Normal.dot and the Registry. Try renaming both Normal.dot and the Registry, restart your PC and then try starting Word.

Global template/add-in: If using Word 2000 you need to check *both* startup folders. The default folder is in:
\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

If you modified the default location then look there or if you don't know where it is you can use the Registry to determine the location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options\“STARTUP-PATH

Note that the "Problems opening Word" article has been revised to make this a little more clear and contains additional information on it:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Let us know what you find! :-)
