Older .doc files

I have Office2000. I tried to open some older .doc files (from 1997, 1998), and word
tells me " Word cannot start the converter mswrd632.wpc".

I tried a repair install, no joy. Then I did the fix described at

which is:
1) Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click OK .

2) Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

For 32-bit versions of Windows

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad

3)On the Edit menu, point to New , and then click DWORD Value .

4)Type AllowConversion for the name of the DWORD, and then press ENTER.

5)Right-click AllowConversion , and then click Modify .

6)In the Value data box, type 1 , and then click OK .

Now Word opens the file without the message, but it's garbage characters.

I use Outlook Express in "Hide Read Messages" view. I could, with a little
effort, mark your message as unread, switch to Show All Messages, and track
down the thread, but the convention here is to quote the entire previous
thread in each message so that it can be followed without having to switch.

In any case, the problem that you are having has been extensively discussed
in several other related threads, one with the error message as the subject
line.

Check that you are not opening the document with the "recover text from any
file" option in the File>Open dialog.

Most people have all of the threads expanded and it is a simple matter (i.e.
no effort required) to look at the original post and determine the
particular problem, which I do not believe has been extensively discussed at

I use TBird in the same way. Here's the OP again. If I put "Word cannot start the
converter mswrd632.wpc" (eithout quotes) in my search window, I get zero posts
returned. Is there a searchable archive somewhere?

As Doug suggests, have you accidentally set File>Open to 'Recover Text from
Any File'? This setting is sticky in Word 2000 (but not in later versions,
fortunately).

That must be why Suzanne wasn't/isn't seeing the posts. Are you using the web
interface or NNTP? The web interface has, AFAIK, always been flaky.

I don't see a setting 'Recover Text' on the File/Open menu.
