I cannot seem to copy and paste pictures from the internet
on to my word document. The box comes up but it's blank.

Tools | Options | View:
1. Check the box for "Drawings."
2. Clear the check box for "Picture placeholders."
Also, make sure you are pasting the actual picture and not just a link to it
(the default). While you are still connected to the Web, select the picture
and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink the field (which you can see by pressing
Alt+F9).
