This problem arises about 80% of the time when I exit out of Word and
I'm wondering if there is a fix, etc?
Thanx in advance.

to add to those answers, if this is a stand alone computer, make sure that
you only have one instance of Normal.dot by searching the hard disk from
Explorer. If there is only one copy, make sure it isn't set to Read Only.
Also make sure it is located in the correct default folder: one problem I
have found recently is that when upgrading from W97 to W2000, two
normal.dots can be found. Win2000, Win/NT and Win98 seem to locate the
normal.dot in different locations and I am not convinced that the Office
installer gets it right every time, leaving an old version in one location
and a new version in the new default location.
But as has already been suggested to you, if this has started suddenly, take
full precautions against a possible Word Macro Virus infection,

Thanks everyone for your replies. To update:
1. I'm running it on a brand-new standalone computer that came
pre-loaded with Word 2000.
2. I did a "find" search for normal.dot, and got only one hit.
3. I checked the default template directory and found a temp file
named "~?Normal.dot" which I have placed in the recycle bin. This
file is invariably created when I get the alert I mentioned in my
original message.
4. I performed a virus scan and nothing was found.
If you aren't using an up-to-date Anti-virus (and you really should) then
download
InnoculatIT (link on my Links webpage). It's free and easy to use.

temp files after a GPF can be a real problem in Word. Search the hard drive
for *.tmp and delete all that you find (you usually need to reboot to do
this as some of the temp files will be windows locks),

Before you buy.
Did you search for and delete all *.tmp files as Terry suggested? Exit
Word and do this first.
Another temp file to search for would be Owner files. It sounds like
part of your problem is that the Owner file for Normal.dot has been
left behind. The Owner file is automatically created when a file is
opened, and deleted when the file is closed properly. When you open a
file Word searches for the Owner file. If found then you get the "This
file in use" message.
An Owner file looks like ~$FileName and is stored in the folder the
original file resides in. If the file is no longer open these should
be deleted. To my knowledge there aren't any other programs that name
their files starting with ~$ other than temp files, but it would be
safer to search for the template Owner files and then the document
Owner files.
Here are the search strings
Templates: ~$*.dot
Documents: ~$*.doc.

And the add to Beth's reply, make sure there is only one instance of
normal.dot located on your computer too,
