Word 07 crashes on startup

I recently upgraded my OS from Vista 64bit to Windows 7 64bit. Office 2007
was already installed and working well. After upgrading to Win7 Word will not
open, it crashes before opening at all.
I've tried uninstall/reinstalling Office; disabling the virus protection and
uninstall/reinstall; removing registry keys, uninstall/reinstall Office 07.
All with restarting the system in between.
Word still crashes on opening (none of the other Office 07 components have
any problem)
Does anyone have any ideas?

My first suspicion is that you haven't installed a compatible printer driver
set as the Windows Default - or at least Word cannot find it. But for more
comprehensive assistance, see

steps. I would be particularly interested to know if Word starts in safe
mode as covered in the article.

Word does start in safe mode (winword.exe /a) I had tried that before but
never got past that. No one has suggested before that the printer driver may
be to blame, but there are several drivers installed and none were
specifically tagged as noncompliant in the prescan for Windows7 compliance.

For the record, I have just reinstalled Windows 7 (after uninstalling Office
2007 and deleting its Registry KEY) I had to do something while I was waiting
for someone to answer and gambled on the possibility of a file being
improperly installed. It made no difference as far as I can tell.
I then reinstalled Office 2007 (Ultimate version); Rebooted (probably not
necessary, but did it anyway); Started Word>crash; Changed the default
printer to HP Colorjet 2605dtn PS (local);

The crash error produced the following "Problem Event" dialogue:

From this I assume that one of the Add-ins is the cause, when I tried to
disable the Acrobat, Contribute, and MS Office Live add-ins I get a message
that "The connected state of Office Add--ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_Machine
cannot be changed"
I worked through the linked article and found that down toward the end he is
addressing WindowsXP related file locations and does not specifically deal
with either Vista or Win7.
I did some looking on my own and found that the Startup directory was empty,
but I couldn't find any TEMP folder in that general location.
Wildcard searches for ~$*.do* found no entries. Have those parameters
changed in Win7?

OfficePlugin.dll suggests an antivirus add-in. Have you checked that?

I have uninstalled the antivirus program (or rather our CS dept did it).
This machine frequently is on the university's network so they had installed
the Enterprise version of Trend Micro's virus protection program.
Is that dll file one that could be deleted?

Find officeplugin.dll, right-click on it and select Properties. Somewhere in
Properties there should be a strong indication of which utility installed
the plug-in. Take it from there.

I ran a search for OfficePlugin.dll and no file by that name was found. ???

SUCCESS!!!
the OfficePlugIn.dll was the culprit.
I finally found it in the Adobe Contribute subdirectory
(C:\Adobe\Contribute\OfficePlugIn.dll). Deleting the file corrected the
problem. Adobe Contribute had been uninstalled yesterday, but apparently not
all the files are removed during the process.
