I need to manage a number of Mac desktops and one server on a network that
also runs Unix and NT. NT is the primary NOS.
I want to use NT to control the other systems. Unix isn't a problem, but
questions lie in how to control Mac desktops through NT?
I know of a product called Mac Prefect but am unsure whether it will
sufficiently do the job. Does anyone know of other means to achieve a
managed desktop (or something close to it) on the Macs through NT Servers?
Thanks,
Dave

Have you looked at Timbuktu?

Check out http://www.hi-resolution.com/ for one solution and
http://www.timbuktupro.com/netoctopus/index.html for two competing
products. The second one is a true cross platform solution. The first
one is Mac only, although it does give you the ability to make every Mac
user log in against their accounts on the NT Server.

Macintosh - we might not get everything right, but at least we knew the century was going to end.'
We use RevRDist here, works great, check out:
http://www.purdue.edu/revrdist/
You'll like the price:-). We use it with NT, works
fine, though I would suggest checking out
ASIP6.1 from a Mac server for the Macs, lets you
get AppleTalk packets off the network.
RevRdist allows you to keep a (or many) Master
folders that clients can be set to automatically
restore too. You can also config. so that unique
clients can restore uniques apps, extensions,
prefs. etc, while using a common System folder.

We used Prefect for a while, but the kids kept
trying to hack it, made it more trouble than it
was worth. Now we just have that trouble with
NTWS4;-). If you have machines dedicated only
to particular, responsible, users, it works ok,
different phil. than RevRDist-Dist fixes problems
on reboot, but does not attempt to prevent
them (other than resotring pref. locks, control
panel settings, etc.), Prefect attempts to
prevent problems, but can't fix them. You can
also use both, if you really want full control;-).

Yep, I use VNC for controlling my PC from Mac, and vica versa. However
the Mac server is less stable than the PC server......
