I am installing Windows XP Professional on a IBM ThinkPad
770X from a backup burned CD. The master CD is damaged
(good thing I made a copy!). I updated the BIOS to
support Windows XP. During the GUI setup stage I receive
the error "Manifest Parse Error: Invalid at top level of
document". The setup log listed the error - "SXS.DLL:
Syntax Error in D:\I386\asms\6000
\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.MAN on line 0"
where D: is the CD drive. I found a site
(www.lecour.net/richard/archives/000050.html) that
suggested creating a new CONTROLS.MAN file that was
not "corrupted". I burned a new CD with a replacement
CONTROLS.MAN file with not luck. What do I do? Thanks!

The "Manifest Parse Error" message indicates that the installation CD you are attempting
to install Windows XP with has write errors as the result of a poor CD burn or corrupt
file image. An authentic Microsoft Windows XP CD would not produce that error message.

Use the original Windows XP installation CD with the edge-to-edge hologram image for a
successful installation.

For retail version replacements: Call (800) 426-9400
For OEM replacements, contact the OEM who sold it.

I recieved the same error message, but I am doing a clean
install (after a full format). I installed XP with the cd
I am using before, but now I get an error? There must be
another way of fixing it, because I don't want to wait all
that time for my cd to come back in the mail by sending it
out.

Since the original CD is damaged, you should be able to get a new CD. It
sounds as though you have an OEM, so you'd need to contact the OEM who sold
it for a replacement.

If it's a retail copy, then 800 426 9400.

Manifest parse error is an error from a bad burn.
