I tried downloading a big codec pack once but never got it to
work to play .FLV or .MP4 format videos.

WMP seems very slow to start and unresponsive, probably due
to being bloated with "Digital Rights Management"
copyright snooping stuff.

VLC works much better for .FLV and MP4 as well as MP3 and other audio.
I like the playlist part especially.
It makes it like a video jukebox or an outright movie player.

One version of VLC was buggy for me, so I stepped back a version.

I've had no problem with WMP. In fact, I've tested in for hundreds of
hours, and it works flawlessly. The software I've written is coded to its
SDK so that's what I have to use.

The problem is not WMP; the problem is that WMP 11 (the last version
available for XP) does not support M4A natively.

ffdshow includes an AAC codec works with WMP 11.
