HP PSC 1600 All-In-One scan/print problem

I have recently acquired a used HP PSC 1600 All-In One. The test print is
OK. Regular printing (without using the scanner) seems OK.
My first attempt at "Copy" resulted in a perfect b/w print except for a
solid black stripe running down the full length of the paper, 11" long X
9/16" wide. (28 cm X 14 mm).
I would greatly appreciate a solution to this problem.

There's generally a reason that a *used* device is sold by the original
buyer. Often, that reason is because the device no longer works as well
as it did when it was new.

Thank you Lem. The link you provided seemed to portray the symptom I am
experiencing, but none of the suggested remedies worked for me. The final
check was an interesting idea, copying a *blank* sheet of paper. The result
for me was the same 14 mm - wide black stripe.........
The instructions were to copy that blank sheet in *black*. I've just had
the brilliant idea to try copy *color*! Result - the same *black* stripe!

Hi Andy,
I had an HP All in One that had a similar problem. What I did to get rid of
it was to remove the cover and tighten the screws that mount the main board
to the metal frame. These screw points are common grounds that connect each
other through the frame. You might also try (with the plug removed)
reseating all the plugs that go to the boards.

Hello again Larry. No joy there. I lifted the scanner cover and removed
four screws, but couldn't get any further. I don't see any metal anywhere
in this All-In-One. I have a worn out ten-year old HP DeskJet 882C printer,
which I'd hoped that this All-In-One would replace. The old printer does
have obvious metal parts.

Mine was an 1170c from around 1999- 2000 era. The back came off and there
was 2 vertically mounted boards accessable after you removed a plate inside
the plastic cover. Looking at a photo on the net of the PSC1600, this looks
quite a bit more modern than the 1170c.

What I'll do now is hook up my old Umax Astra 1220P scanner (which DOES
work) to the All-In-One. If I'd known I would have done this in the first
place. I won't be able to do the one-button "Copy", but what the ****!
