I am trying to install an HP Deskjet 5550 printer on my
Windows XP Pro computer, but repeatedly get a message
saying the hardware cannot be installed because "The
parameter is incorrect." I spent hours on the phone with
HP but they now say it is a Windows problem having to do
with "rights" not allowing the installation. Has anyone
had this problem? Can you help solve it? Thank you.

I've got exactly the same problem on my XP Home ed.
When I try to install my Canon S830D driver it says
AddPrinterDriver Error
"The parameter is incorrect"

I've done sfc /scannow
Also uninstalled SP1 then reinstalled from a fresh
copy.
Also downloaded lattest XP drivers from the Canon
wesbite.
System restore to a much earlier date was uneventfull.

Couldn't find any relevant articles on the microsoft
website.

Printer turned off as instructed.
Still no luck.

Please help.

This sounds a little like the "corrupted .PNF" problem. Can you do the
following:

1. go to the %windir%\inf directory (it's hidden, so either you need to
change the explorer folder options, or you just use a command prompt)
2. move printupg.pnf (not printupg.INF !!) somewhere else
3. retry - if it succeeds, send me the printupg.pnf. Though I have
circumstantial evidence that it may get corrupted, I have not yet gotten a
hold of a corrupted file.
4. if that didn't fix the problem, do the same for ntprint.pnf (not .INF
!!!)
5. if that doesn't fix it, move infcache.1
6. if that doesn't fix it, move oemxxxx.pnf (xxxx being a sequential number)

If you could send me any corrupted file you can identify, I'd highly
appreciate it. You need to take the online. off my return address to make
sure it reaches me.
