Hello,

Would anyone be able to tell us how to change the Task Menu back to its
default setting?

When opening the "My Pictures" folder, instead of seeing the 'Picture Tasks'
menu, I see the 'Music Tasks' menu. There must be a configuration file or a
registry setting somewhere that can edited ...?

THANKS, thanks, thanks!

Sonny

Right click on the folder, click on Properties.
A box will open. Click on the Customize tab and change the selection from
Music to Pictures.
Next time you open the folder you should have Picture Tasks.
This change probably occurred because you have a mixture of file types in
this folder and the first file listed is a music file instead of a photo
file.

I have the exact same situation with my "My Picture" folder. When I
right-click on the folder, I do not see a box that offers "customize" as an
option. The only tabs I see are "general" and "sharing".

BTW, there are ZERO music files in my pictures folder.

You are correct. When you right click on My Pictures, and click on
Properties, you will not have the Customize tab. This is because My Pictures
folder was made by XP and you cannot customize it. For any folder you made
yourself, you will have the Customize tab. I forgot about this because I
don't use My Pictures. I make a new folder for each set of photos.
Now, how to solve the problem without this tab?
One possibility is that the photo file type association with XP functions
has been lost. To see if this is so, place your mouse pointer over the name
(in details view) or thumbnail (in thumbnails view) of one of your .jpg file
in the My Pictures folder. A yellow textbox should open. At the top of this
box should be the dimensions of the picture in pixels, say 640 x 480. If
dimensions is not listed, XP has lost the fact that this is a picture file
and you don't get the Picture Tasks when you open the folder.
To get the function back, click on Start, click on Run and type the
following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press Enter.
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
After running this command, open My Pictures and see if you have Picture
Tasks instead of Music Tasks.

All photos within the "My Pictures" folder are *now* within categorized
folders. *Each* of these folders now has the correct "Picture Tasks"
displayed. So far, so good.

However, the full "My Pictures" folder still displays "Music Tasks" in the
lefthand pane. Why should this be?

Fine, now you have Picture Tasks for the folders you made and you know how
to customize a folder.
Did you run the test and command from my previous post to see if it changed
Music Tasks for your My Pictures folder to Picture Tasks?
I can't tell you why you have Music Tasks, I can only suggest how you can
change it back to Picture Tasks by testing your files in My Pictures and
then running the command I suggested.

Hi Thom,

There is a similar thread on: microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics if you
scroll down to 12 - May 15:14
you'll see several posts under "re-setting Default Folder Tasks". I have
tried all of the mentioned tricks, and I wind up with either a Music Tasks
pane in My Pictures folder, or a Picture Tasks pane in My Music folder. The
last suggestion in the thread, proved to be the most reasonable for me for
now - maybe for you too.

But it still leaves me wondering. I've even tried restoring from a backup
file the original .ini file(s) without and luck. The problem must be
somewhere else.

Thanks, I found the answer there. Not by going to Kelly's Corner, though.
The proceedure listed there for restoring folder options was unnecessary for
my case.

Instead, all I had to do was reset all folder options. Tools/folder
options/vew/reset all folders did the trick!

Thanks for the direction!
